Excerpt from Christie Chuakay’s Christie’s Volunteering Adventures

I can’t believe that a week ago today I was half way across the world in Nepal! It still feels so surreal. So many exciting things happened during my 6 days in Nepal and I will highlight the most memorable experience of the trip!!

The best part of the entire Nepal trip was visiting the Room To Read school. Here is some background about the school. As you may know, Rick and John are strong believers in Corporate Social Responsibility and a few years ago we had a fundraising event “Lend Me Your Ears.” We raised enough money to build a free standing library in Nepal to service a village of 5,000 kids. One of our partners Jill Donahue (who I’ve become great friends with over the past few years) spoke at the event and she was inspired to create an event targeted toward the pharma industry. Jill and her pharma group raised enough money to build an entire school! We went to visit the school.

Bricks and Books, the do good, feel good leadership charity event is pleased thank you for helping us reach and exceed our BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) in 2010! With matching funds, our little pharma community pulled together and is responsible for contributing $84K to build the Shree Nepal Loksewa Higher Secondary School in Nepal with Room to Read.

The plaque in front of the school reads as follows:

“This school was established through the cooperation of the local community, Room to Read and the pharmaceutical community in Canada. Care for this place, for it will build people, community, and endless opportunities for success.”

Thanks to our efforts, children will now have access to a new and safe learning environment that is no longer dark or overcrowded, and does not have to close during the rainy season due to a leaky roof or muddy floor. Thanks to you, the children can learn in a more stimulating, literate environment where they are encouraged to explore and achieve their potential.

A small group representing the Bricks and Books contributors has been organized. They will be arriving in Nepal on May 16th and staying until May 21st. Representatives from Room to Read will be accompanying the group to the school. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and all are welcome. Please contact Christie Chuakay (Christie.chuakay@bwyze.com) for more information. Travel and accommodations are easy (and High Quality)! Christie can fill you in on the details.

We hope you are feeling good about what you did last year! Now, take a minute and register for this year at www.bricksandbooksevent.com and join our group on LinkedIN. Be a part of this very special community. Together, we can build another school!!
